Energy Efficiency Tricks
I get asked for simple tips to increase buildings energy efficiency ratings. In my opinion, small changes often make the biggest difference. That’s why I’ve put together some energy efficiency tricks that I’d recommend to any landlord, employer or commercial property owner.
Let’s start with the basics. I’ve previously seen huge savings made just by switching to LED lighting. It’s one of the quickest and easiest wins. I always suggest checking your lighting first—especially in older workplaces or commercial spaces.
Another great tip is to look at your insulation. A well-insulated building holds heat better, reducing the need for constant heating. I’ve carried out many energy performance certificates where poor insulation was the main reason for a low EPC rating.
I would also recommend installing smart heating controls. In my experience, employers save money and energy by using programmable thermostats. You’ll be surprised how effective they can be in improving efficiency.
If you’re a landlord, consider upgrading windows to double or triple glazing. Tenants appreciate it, and it often results in a better EPC. Plus, it’s a great way to boost the value of your rental property.
For commercial properties, I think regular HVAC maintenance is key. I’ve seen systems running inefficiently just because they hadn’t been cleaned or serviced. An efficient system not only saves energy but also extends the life of your equipment.
A simple workplace tip? Turn things off! I always tell clients that equipment left on standby still uses energy. Encourage staff to power down at the end of the day.
